Councillor Nick Small is the Cabinet Member for Growth and Economy at Liverpool City Council.
Cllr Small has been at the forefront of various initiatives aimed at driving economic growth within Liverpool. His work focuses on supporting local businesses, fostering economic development, and improving the city’s overall prospects. He is passionate about creating opportunities for residents and ensuring that Liverpool remains a thriving city.
With a strong commitment to his community, Cllr Small continues to work diligently to ensure that his constituents have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives.
Cllr Small was born and grew up in Liverpool. He graduated with an MA in Politics from the University of Edinburgh and has an MBA in Business Finance and Management from the University of Liverpool. Cllr Small worked as a management consultant for 11 years for Grant Thornton and KPMG, specialising in the financial sector.
Cllr Small has been instrumental in developing links between the City of Liverpool and China; including leading investment delegations to key Chinese cities.
In August 2024, Cllr Small led a business delegation to China, comprising universities and education businesses from Liverpool. This visit marked the 25th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Liverpool and Guangzhou, underscoring the commitment to strengthening educational and business collaborations.
Demonstrating a commitment to cultural exchange, Cllr Small has been involved in organising and promoting Liverpool’s Chinese New Year celebrations. In February 2025, he participated in the festivities marking the Year of the Snake, highlighting the city’s appreciation for Chinese culture and its diverse community.
Through these activities, Cllr Small plays a pivotal role in strengthening the economic, educational, and cultural connections between Liverpool and China.
