What is the UK Screen Investment Programme?
The UK Screen Investment Programme, in partnership with Hertfordshire Futures, is a new national platform established to champion and drive growth in the UK’s screen sector through collaboration, investment, and innovation.
The screen industry has contributed more than £17.4 billion to the UK economy and directly employs approximately 300,000 people. It is a national asset, fuelling economic growth both directly through film and TV production, and indirectly through screen tourism, music tie-ins, gaming, immersive technology, and esports.
The UK Screen Investment Programme aims to build on the sector’s strengths and unlock new opportunities for growth across all four UK nations. This includes investment in hi-tech studio infrastructure, government financing and inward investment, developing indigenous skills and production capacity, embedding sustainability, exploring innovations such as AI, and showcasing the strengths UK screen sector to foreign investors.
The programme aligns with the Government’s Industrial Strategy and Creative Industries Sector Vision, setting out high-level, strategic actions to support the screen sector’s growth in the coming years.
Globally renowned companies such as Sky, Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, and Elstree Studios are based in Hertfordshire, alongside other major brands like Pinewood and Disney UK located in the South East. Cities including Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, and London all host screen clusters with outstanding potential for growth. Notable upcoming developments include the recently approved £450 million Crown Works Studios in Sunderland, in the North East.
Hertfordshire has also seen significant screen investment in recent years. Over half of the new studio space currently planned or under development in London and the South East is located within the county — including the newly completed Sky Studios Elstree.
The inaugural UK Screen Investment Summit, in partnership with Hertfordshire Futures, took place on Wednesday 26 November at BAFTA 195 Piccadilly. This flagship event explored the programme’s core themes to accelerate the growth momentum.
